Eastern Trails Museum is staffed entirely by curator Wanda Norton and a select group of volunteer docents, most afternoons from around 1:30 to around 4:00pm. The museum is closed on Sunday and all holidays when the library is closed. Admission is free. You are encouraged to call ahead to be sure a volunteer will be available. Telephone is 918-256-2115.

Museum History

Eastern Trails Museum was established in the Vinita City Hall in 1968, first as a Craig County Museum. The name changed as a reminder of the major north-south trails that traversed the county as early as 1824. Displays at the museum include many items associated with the history of the Cherokee, Shawnee, and Delaware Indians.

Manned entirely by volunteers, under the leadership of long-time curator Wanda Norton, the museum occupies a wing of the Maurice Haynes Memorial building, which also is home to the Vinita Public Library, Craig County Genealogy Society, and the Vinita Literacy Council.

Curator Wanda Norton was honored in April 2003 by the Oklahoma Heritage Association with its coveted Distinguished Service Award. Vinita is privileged to be home to such a knowledgeable and hard-working individual, and we are honored by her dedication.
